Street in New York renamed for L&O

NYC officials have renamed a street on the west side of Manhattan "Law & Order Way" in honor of the show. The street is near Pier 62 (down around 23rd Street), where the show's officers and -- I think -- the studio are. I'll go over and take a picture of the sign soon....

No Spin-off This Fall

Law & Order: Trial by Jury, the Jerry Orbach spin-off from the original series, that was supposed to premiere this fall, is missing from NBC's fall schedule! I guess they will rotate it in as a mid-season replacement. However, the earlier rumors that Dennis Farina would join the cast of the original series are true, so we can expect to see him try to fill Orbach's shoes this fall....

What I've Learned So Far

Having watched and summarized 100 episodes of Law & Order since December 23, I have learned the following things: Hudson University is a very dangerous place. There's no such thing as a happily-married rich couple. You could be saying anything when you unexpectedly discover a dead body in the alley/park/garage, but you'll probably be complaining about your wife or your boyfriend. Sulky kids kill people, but nobody suspects them until everyone else in their family has been falsely accused. There's no mystery on the street, no arch-criminal behind it all. If you got a dead guy and you think his brother did it, you're going to find out you're right. Usually. Having a big family meeting in the DA's conference...

Slate on TD Waterhouse and Law & Order

Here's an article on Slate about the relationship between financial firm TD Waterhouse and Law & Order. You probably noticed Steven Hill was replaced by Sam Waterston. Turns out Jerry Orbach did some pitching for them too. [via this Usenet post]...

Rene Balcer on Usenet

In researching another post, I came across some postings to Usenet from Rene Balcer, former show runner of the Original Series and the co-creator of Criminal Intent. Anyway, here's a post he wrote about CI during its early days, after some episodes had been filmed but before they aired. It's an informative look from his perspective at the concept behind the show.PS. Here's another post in which Balcer (or at least someone claiming to be him) says he had originally intended Claire Kincaid to survive and re-appear, but due to real-life issues, they kept her "dead, dead, dead."...

Photos from a L&O shoot in East Harlem

Our friends over at manyhighways.com snapped some photos of a Law & Order shoot on 104th and Lexington a couple weeks ago. [second item] Note that the production designers built a complete facade over one of the buildings. There is no Center for the Study of Santeria on 104th Street.I don't know which show this shoot was for, but if I had to guess, I'd say SVU, since that seems like the show most likely to feature ritualistic violence and also the one most likely to exaggerate the morbid aspects of Santeria....
